Mt Nemrut National Park, SE Anatolia, Turkey
Turkey - but not the Turkey that most people see. This trip goes way out there to the Southeastern Anatolias, A fascinating area of Turkey that borders Syria, Iraq and Iran. This is the ancient land called Mesopotamia, between the Tigris and Euphrates River. We will see the holy cities of Job and Abraham, a landscape of extinct volcanoes, bizarre giant statues, and visit areas only recently opened to travelers.

Mud baths, hammams, coverered markets, ancient cities… and some really great food.

With two guides - one a native Turkish woman (raised in London) - we will have access to the real culture seldom seen by tourists.
Mardin, Turkey

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

The pilgrimage town of Sanliurfa - also known as Urfa, one of the greatest religious and historical sites in Turkey. Close to the Syrian border, we are truly no longer in the western world. 12th century mosques, covered and open bazaars, and the cave where Job (the patient one) sat for 7 years.

Harran - an hour south of Urfa is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on earth. Mentioned in the book of Genesis (that's old!). Haran is also famous for its beehive shaped stone houses.

Nemrut Dagi Milli Parki (Mt Nemrut National Park) - Along the summit of the Nemrut Dagi mountain lie mysterious giant statues. Earthquakes have knocked the heads off many of these statues, and the 6 foot tall heads lie near their former bodies. We reach Mount Nemrut by taking a ferry across the Euphrates River.

Diyarbakir - The Kurdish walled city of Diyarbakir is too rarely visited by tourists. With its twisting mazelike streets and great circuit of basalt walls, this is a fascinating place to visit.

Mardin - An ancient city overlooked by an ancient castle. Mardin has a Syrian feel to it. Winding streets and exotic bazaars. Nearby is the lovely village of Savur, where we can stay in a magnificent hill-top mansion or spend an evening in an old Assyrian monastery.

Hasankeyf - A village clinging to the sides of the gorge above the Tigris Rver. We pass through the city of Batman(!) to get here. This interesting town of ancient sites, palaces, mosques, and caves will soon be underwater, a victim of the new dam. We must see it now before it is erased.

Gobekli Tepe - Discovered only two years ago, the site of Gobekli Tepe is thought to be the oldest human site in the world, dating back twelve or thirteen thousand years. Amidst a colorful landscape this site has impressive well preserved stone carvings of foxes, lizards, boars, ducks and big cats. Some archeologists have claimed that this site will completely redefine how we look at the history of humanity, the origin of religion and perhaps even the truth behind the garden of Eden!

All this and the famous Turkish hospitality, unexpectedly comfortable transportation, and the endless surprises that true adventure travel brings - this is one trip not to miss!
